WHAT: 14.6-mile ride on new Seacoast Greenway
WHEN: Wednesday, September 25, 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Hampton Airfield, Hampton, NH
LEADER: Bennie DiNardo
I'm away next week, but we have a great bike ride lined up for Sept. 25. Governor Sununu recently cut the ribbon on the new Seacoast Greenway, a trail that will eventually hook up with other parts of the East Coast Greenway and help people ride off-road from Portland, Maine, to Boston. I rode the trail last week and it's a great crushed limestone surface with few street crosses.
Park in the lot at the Hampton Airfield in Hampton, NH. It's about an hour's drive. The round trip to the Portsmouth Skate Park and back is 14.6 miles, with what's listed as 1,100 feet of climbing but is very flat and gradual.
Your reward for completing this ride is lunch at the Airfield Cafe, a great restaurant with tables outside and big windows inside to watch the private planes take off and land. I had a terrific meal of steak and eggs on our visit.
Make sure your bike is ready to ride; my simple reminder to myself is to check ABC (air, brakes, and cables) before leaving the house. Helmets are required. Flashing lights at the rear to warn cars of your presence is an excellent idea. Nordic Skier has some good ones.
Please register if you are interested! I can't map it yet because Ride with GPS doesn't know the trail is open, but I can share with you my recent ride in the opposite direction so you can get a sense of where the ride will take us: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/219287485
